Burke/South Central fans turned
out in full force on Friday night,
September 30rd, to cheer the Cou-
gars to a 22-20 Homecoming vic-
tory against the Avon Pirates. The
temperature was a bit cool, but the
excitement of the success the Cou-
gars were having as the game pro-
gressed kept everyone warmed up.
Such a great crowd of fans showed
up that even the concession stand
ran out of hot dogs!
Both teams struggled to put to-
gether successful plays in the first
quarter, but Avon did get lucky once
when Tyler Kopp ran in from the
16 yard line, the Cougar defense
stiffened, and the extra points were
denied. The quarter ended with the
-Pirates in the lead 0-6.
Avon scored again in the second
quarter when Sam Eben caught an
8-yard pass from Jacob Cihak. Re-
peating the play resulted in Avon
collecting the extra points taking
a 14-0 lead. Jaden Frank finally
connected, catching a 35-yard pass
from Brock Karbo to put the first
points up and Brock rushed the line
and punched through for the 2-point
conversion, ending the half 14-
8.
The Cougars kept the Pirates at
bay during the third quarter and
were able to score on a 35-yard run
from Vladik Johnson. Brock Kar-
bo connected with Tyrone Mizner
in the end zone for the extra point
score, ending the third quarter with
the Cougars in the lead 16-14.
Vladik Johnson found a hole in
the fourth quarter and ran 19 yards
for the touchdown, but the Cougars
were unable to put the extra points
on the board, giving them 22 points.
Avon was also able to score when
Jacob Cihak ran in from the 14 in
the final minutes of the game. A
failed play for extra points ended
a Pirate chance to put the game in
overtime and handed the Cougars
the 22-20 victory.

COACHES COMMENTS
It was not always the prettiest,
but we are very proud and excited
for our team. They got down 14-0,
and fought back! They continue
to improve, and believe they can
be much better. We need to keep
our heads down and keep plug-
ging away.
