i ! I ! More then a few tears were shed during the flower presentation held at Graduation on Sunday afternoon. Han- nah Karbo is pictured above, a glimmer of a tear in her eye, as she gives mom, Susie Karbo, a hug. Katie Biggins is shown at left, trying to catch the special moment on film and Kasi Johnson is shown at right, eyes fixed on her parents as she anticipates her special moment. Georgia Serr is pictured above giving her grandson, Tyson Serr, a huge congratulatory hug during the flower presentation at the Commencement Ceremony held on Sunday. Georgia Serr kept the Gazette hoping these past few weeks taking Patriotic photos for her role in the Burke VFW Ladies Auxiliary, we were happy to capture this special picture for her and Tyson. Julie Baker gives her son, Kasey Baker, a high five during the recessional at Graduation~on Sunday afternoon. The room was filled with smiles at the finale of the event, and many special moments between the graduates and their parents, like this one. Sunday morning the group was able to visit the Karl Mundt Na- tional Wildlife Refuge which has no public access except for festival participants. The checklist for the weekend included 137 species of birds with new additions from previous years being a Yellow-throated Vireo, Northern Mockingbird and Wood Thrush. This festival is a fun filled weekend for people interested in birds - no matter what your ability. Winner Regional News Notes By: Ann Schwader Field Specialist Healthful Whole Grains We hear a lot about whole grains, including the USDA's My- Plate (http://1 .usa.gov/1Wf8piu) message that recommends we make at least half our grains whole, but there may be individuals who won- der why it's important to eat whole grains. According to MyPlate, "Peo- ple who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases." Whole grains contain three parts: the bran, the germ and the endosperm. Refined grains such as white flour, white rice and white pasta only contain the endosperm. The bran is the outer shell that pro- tects the seed. It contains B vita- mins, fiber and trace minerals. The germ has B vitamins and vitamin E. The endosperm provides carbo- hydrates and protein which deliver energy. Eating the entire grain al- lows the benefits of all three parts to work together. You'll want to be sure that the products you choose are actually made from whole grains. Look for one of the following terms listed first on the ingredient label: Brown rice, bulgur, oatmeal, quinoa, rolled oats, whole grain barley, whole grain corn, whole grain oats, whole rye, whole wheat, and millet, to name a few. Eating more whole grains provides energy for daily activities and low- ers the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Tips & Techniques The following tips are helpful to adding more whole grains in your daily food pattern. **Try 100% whole grain snack crackers. **Pop- corn is a whole grain snack. Three Wednesday, June 1, 2016 14 cups of whole grain, air-popped popcorn is a good source of fiber and has only 95 calories. **Let children help select and prepare whole grain side dishes. **Substitute up to one half of the white flour with whole grain flour when baking. **Substi- tute whole-grain products for things you already buy. Try whole wheat pasta or brown rice. **Use whole grain bread to make French toast; it has a hearty texture and tastes great. **When making meatloaf or meatballs, use whole grain bread or cracker crumbs. **Try an unsweet- ened, whole grain ready-to-eat ce- real as croutons in salad. **Use a crushed, unsweetened whole grain cereal or rolled oats as breading for baked chicken or fish.
